It is back to school and back to the Arboretum. The Education Department at Reeves-Reed Arboretum has some great fall classes and programs scheduled for children and families. Don’t delay, register today!

The Arboretum is celebrating water the month of September.  Families are invited to stop by the Discovery Center any Saturday, beginning September 10 between 9:00 am – and 1:00 pm.  Check out a backpack and take a nature walk or participate in one of the water themed activities for the month. No registration is necessary. There is no charge for members; nonmembers pay $5.00 per child.

The Wesson Family Nature Grove, just dedicated in July, is the perfect place for Tea Under the Trees. Thanks to a generous donation from the Wesson family, this newest addition to the Arboretum landscape provides the perfect setting for children ages five and up (with an adult) to learn about flower lore, make sachets and enjoy tea and treats  under the grand Elephant Tree. This program is offered on September 18th and September 24th.

The very popular Oaks and Acorns series for children ages 3-5 with an adult) starts up again on September  20th. Children, alongside their parent/caregiver, will gain a wonderful introduction to nature as they discover some of the incredible plants and animals that make the Arboretum so special!  Embark on a journey that will help build a love of the earth that will last a lifetime!  A different theme will be explored each week with nature walks, crafts, stories and songs - a shared nature experience to be treasured! Sign up for individual classes, or receive a discount and sign up for the 4 week series.  Space is limited so register early.

For the nature kid in your family (ages 6-9) sign them up for Migration Madness on  Wednesday, September 21st   from 3:30-5:00 pm. Grab an afterschool snack and head on over to the Arboretum to learn about the many feathered friends who are beginning their long trip south for the winter.  Celebrate the first day of Fall by learning about the challenges these birds face on their journey and make a bird feeder to help nourish them for their trip.  Registration is required.

The fall Great American Backyard Campout, now in its second year, will be held on Friday evening, September 30. Pitch your tent, snuggle into your sleeping bag and enjoy an autumn night out on the grounds of the Arboretum.  Gather for s’mores and stories, learn about the night sky and sit back and enjoy some live entertainment. Space is limited so register early.

Make sure to save the date for the Arboretum’s annual Celebrate Fall festival, sponsored by Kings Supermarkets. This year the event will take place on Sunday, October 30th when Celebrate Fall Goes Country!

Grab your overalls and straw hats and come on down to the Arboretum for an afternoon of old-fashioned family fun!  Enjoy country fair style food, crafts and games.  Get in the Halloween spirit with our annual costume parade, “Spooky” Trail and pumpkin carving contest.  See you at the Hoedown!
