Planning Our Garden

It's springtime at the Arboretum! and the children in the Let's Get Growing and Garden Palooza mini camp programs have been eagerly learning the Square Foot Gardening method.

Our little gardeners have been busy designing their gardens on paper; learning how to build a 1 x 1 foot square foot garden box; practicing how to sow seeds using the fun Zip Zap Bing Bing Bing Bing technique and crafting stepping stones to place in their gardens.

The magic numbers of 1, 4, 9,+ 16 have become an important starting point as the children learn how to place their seeds and plants in the soil, giving them just the right amount of space to allow them to grow to their full potential.

Tiny seedlings of kale, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, leeks, onions, sunflowers are off to a great start in the greenhouse, waiting for the moment to be transplanted into the garden. Soil is being prepared for the square foot garden beds. It's springtime at the Arboretum and it's time to garden.

Happy Spring and Happy Gardening!
