Location: Grounds

ART in the Garden 2015 will open with a gala event on Saturday, June 6, featuring an art installation entitled THE GRASS MENAGERIE – fantastical creatures at Reeves-Reed Arboretum. Twenty internationally renowned, award-winning artists will showcase their fanciful works both on the Arboretum grounds and in the Wisner House Gallery.

The artists, drawn from the tri-state area and as far away as Canada and the United Kingdom, include:  Donald Alter, Linda Banks, Cindy Booth, Paul Burke, Peter Clark, Carol Flaitz, Dennis Folz, Barbara Galazzo, Marta Gutierrez, Sarah Haviland, Tom Holmes, Anita Jacobson, Rebecca Jewell, Herman Roggerman, Lisa Scroggins, Maria Simonsson, and Jim Smith. Pieces will include ceramic tiles decorated with geckos, butterfly photography, paintings, prints, collages, jet-black life-sized wooden ravens, wire and out-of-this-world fabric sculptures, glass insects, and a fourteen foot lighted dragon fly! Noted costume artists and performers, Annie Hickman and Allynn Gooen, will also be on hand, dressed in super-sized fantastical praying mantis costumes, to welcome arriving gala guests. Together, these wonderful artists will provide the backdrop for Reeves-Reed Arboretum's major fundraiser, as well as the spellbinding, charmed, and breathing inspiration for the Arboretum's many educational programs

THE GRASS MENAGERIE – fantastical creatures at Reeves-Reed Arboretum will officially open to the general public with an artists' reception on Sunday afternoon, June 14, from 2 to 4 pm and will continue through October 31. This exhibition, co-curated by Barbara Galazzo and Frank Juliano, is made possible in part, thanks to Elisa and Michael O'Rourke, Robin and Cam McClearn, and with the cooperation of Marta Gutierrez and Maria Simonsson, Gallery66 (Cold Spring, NY) and the Rebecca Hossack Gallery (NYC).

All are welcome to come and experience what promises to be the exhibition of the year in New Jersey!

Reeves-Reed Arboretum announces its first art exhibition of the 2015 season – LEAF – STONE – WATER, watercolors by Marc Montefusco, the Arboretum's Director of Horticulture.

Montefusco's fascination with landscape painting dates from his tenure at the Smithsonian Institution, where he lived day-to-day with some of the masterpieces of American Impressionism. "They had a profound effect on my understanding of American art, and set an impossibly high standard for craftsmanship and artistic expression." He is also indebted to his friend and mentor, artist and educator Patrick Collins of the Cate School in Carpenteria, California.

For several years, Marc worked with the fields and aging buildings of Maryland's Middletown Valley. More recently, he has been inspired by the Connecticut woods and shorelines to create more intimate landscapes. His goal is to faithfully recreate the patterns of the natural world in what he calls a "reverse trompe-l'oeil," where seemingly random arrangements of color and form reveal themselves to be accurate depictions of natural phenomena.

In addition to being a painter, Marc is a professional horticulturist and writer, and an amateur musician.

LEAF – STONE – WATER is at the Wisner House Gallery of Reeves-Reed Arboretum from April 7 through May 25. There is an artist reception on Friday evening, May 8, from 6 to 8 pm, which also happens to correspond with National Public Gardens Day. The artist will donate 30% of all art sales to the Arboretum.
